The Skipjack Races take place in the Tangier Sound off of Deal Island, Maryland. They're an annual event which is held on Labor Day. It's always an interesting contest to see, not to mention the picturesque setting of the event, as the crews try to catch the wind and use the tide to their best advantage. It takes great skill to handle these Chesapeake Bay giants. While some skipjacks sail better in high winds and others are at an advantage if the winds are lighter, it's the captain's experience that can make the difference. At work or at play, there are only a few of these beautiful oyster boats left to sail on the Chesapeake Bay. Click here to see nineteen more screensaver-sized images of the skipjacks. |
